Donate Sight to Those who Need it through Sightsavers Charity

Sightsavers is a UK based charity that provides assistance to treatable blindness. Treatable blindness is blindness caused by poor living conditions, parasites, poor nutrition, and other qualifying conditions of bad eyesight that can be cured. One of the largest use of the donations for Sightsavers is it’s deworming program.

The deworming program is just that. Deworming means to administer drugs to populations that are at risk to have Schistosomiasis and Soil-Transmitted Helminths. It is found it is cheaper just to give a large population of a drug to get rid of Schistosomiasis and Soil-Transmitted Helminths whether people have it or not. The cost of giving the drug is about 55 cents a person. Studies have found that the deworming drug administered has improved the lives of the people given the drug.

Sightsavers is a large organization with unrestricted funding and fundraising capacity. Deworming is not the only way Sightsavers help. Sightsavers has helped to eliminate trachoma from Ghana with sight-saving surgeries. Trachoma is a bacterial infection of the eye. It eventually leads to blindness if not treated.

“What is river blindness?” River blindness is a parasitic infection that can, over time, cause irreversible blindness. The disease is spread by the bite of infected black flies that breed near fast-flowing rivers. 120 million people are at risk worldwide. River blindness can lead to severe skin irritation, pain and sight loss. 500,000 people are blind because of it. 37 million are infected by the disease. Medication can stop it spreading. Fly catchers work to eradicate the flies that carry river blindness. Together, we can eliminate the disease. Thanks to Sightsavers a woman in Ghana named Rahinatu was one of the last people treated for trachoma. Thanks to the help of Sightsavers, trachoma has been eradicated from Ghana. Rahinatu used to not be able to walk anymore nor see her grandchildren. Now she can do both thanks to the sight-saving surgery possible by the donations from Sightsavers.

People in the western world are lucky not have had to deal with some of the diseases and troubles that occur from the tropical weather and poor conditions. Thanks to the generous donation by people around the world who have extra, they make it possible to help others who have less then what they need to survive. It is thanks to organizations like Sightsavers and the people who work for them, they can provide assistance to Africa and worldwide who need disability assistance they can not afford.
